According to a recent survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry® (AACD):
Nine out of every ten adults in America consider an attractive smile to be an important social asset
Eight out of ten believe that an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to the opposite sex
Three-fourths suspect that an unattractive smile can negatively impact their career opportunities
Nearly half said they would like to make some improvement in the appearance of their smile
Your smile affects so many aspects of your life
I think we all know our smile can affect our success when it comes to dating and relationships. Not only is it something that other people find attractive but having a great smile also gives us the self confidence to shine.
When it comes to your financial success a poor smile can cost us jobs, business deals and sales from clients. It’s not that people mean to judge us on our smile but no matter what we say to ourselves we know that first impressions count.
When you put all this together a great smile means one important thing… confidence. When we look our best we feel more confident and are more willing to put that winning smile forward. We believe in ourselves and other people see it.
Now let’s talk about why we believe you should choose Cosmetic Dental.
People are unhappy with their smile for many different reasons. These can include…
Older amalgam fillings
Stains or discolouration
You might also be suffering from painful and sometimes embarrassing problems like bleeding gums or bad breath due to your teeth.
Everyone has different problems that are unique to you. Therefore it’s hard to describe here the best way to give you the smile you desire. You can weary yourself by reading about all the different dental procedures and technologies available but we won’t know anything until we get a look inside your mouth.
We also find out patients aren’t particularly interested in the technologies we use (although we’re happy to explain them) and would rather just know about the results. What you do need to know is we use the leading technologies and procedures in New Zealand to give you the results you deserve. There’s a reason other dentists come to see how we work.
To see our results we suggest you head over to our Patient Smile Gallery and find a “before” picture that looks similar to your current smile. Then you can see how we transformed that patients smile and how we can get you similar results.
The next step is to have a Smile Makeover Consultation with Dr. Kan or Dr. Sim. They will examine your smile and give you their recommendation for the best treatment options to transform your smile.
“My teeth were a mess but that was the last thing on my mind to get fixed at the time. Because of our financial situation, I made the wrong decision and had my problem teeth pulled out, which I regretted over time. I promised myself that once my children had grown up I would get my teeth fixed and get my smile back. I found it embarrassing to smile and was very self conscious.”
“Dr Michael Kan changed my life. The best thing I have ever done for my self was going to Cosmetic Dental and meeting Dr Michael Kan. He gave me my confidence back and a beautiful white smile that everybody comments on and is envious about.”
“My beautiful smile involved the following treatments over the course of a year: Gum treatments, implants, veneers, crowns and whitening. I was so ecstatic with the results. My teeth look white and straight but very natural. People who don’t know me cannot tell I had cosmetic dentistry because they look so natural.”
Adrian Knowles wasn’t looking for an extreme makeover when he sat in Remuera dentist Michael Kan’s chair, but he did know something extreme needed to be done. Decades of neglect had left him with only one tooth he could chew with — and it had become wobbly.
Knowles had long since stopped smiling. “Or if I did it would be a little smirk. People have pointed out to me that they thought I was either incredibly sad or very grumpy. I just did everything I could to avoid opening my mouth.”
His dream was to be able to smile with confidence. Other dentists had tried but gave up.
Knowles’ mouth is now an encyclopedia of modern dentistry. Firstly, Kan sent him for a three-dimensional head x-ray so there would be no guesswork when it came time to place implants. Without that technology, says Knowles, the risk of the unknown would have been too great to justify some of the procedures they used.
From there they came up with a plan: it began with a gum treatment, which removed calculus (tartar) and plaque; then came a set of functional orthodontic plates — a bit like dentures — to open up Knowles’ jaw and correct his cross-bite, paired with a set of relatively unobtrusive ceramic braces at the front to straighten the teeth and create room for the implants.
Knowles then had a bone graft in his top jaw and a sinus lift, which pushed his sinus cavity up, and enabled new bone to grow. Eight implants were drilled into his jaw to hold his new teeth, a root canal problem was fixed and titanium posts were implanted to strengthen his weakened original teeth. That completed the groundwork.
Kan then set about fixing Knowles’ “bite” — to make his upper and lower teeth meet — which involved building up his teeth with composite material. He used a laser to reshape and remove unwanted soft tissue. Then the implants were crowned, Knowles’ eight amalgam fillings were replaced with ceramic inlays, eight porcelain veneers and two crowns were bonded on, and a four-tooth bridge was inserted to cover a large gap.
"I was amazed at what they could do. Every time I went there it was like an episode of Space 1999 — they’d pull out a new gizmo. I had no idea of the extraordinary complexity of the problems and how they’d solve them."
