Dr. Michael Kan graduated in 1988, with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, from the University of Otago School of Dentistry. Born in Masterton, and raised in Dunedin, Dr. Kan’s grandparents immigrated to Dunedin in the late 18th century and early 19th century.

Dexterity came naturally to Michael from a childhood passion of building scale models and crafting balsa wood airplanes, and boats. At school, he was awarded multiple merits in drawing, woodwork, metalwork, and science.

After graduation, Michael held positions in general practice and covered at accident and emergency clinics in Auckland.

In 1994, Michael was awarded a fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, in the area of restorative and reconstructive dentistry. This was by examination, held over 2 years in Sydney, Australia.

After achieving the highest marks at the New Zealand Institute of Cosmetic Dentistry in the year 2000, Michael was invited to join Cometic Dental as a partner.

Michael is an Invisalign Platinum provider and has also been awarded a dental implant fellowship from the ICOI (International Congress Of Oral Implantologists) based the USA.

Dentistry became a personal interest after a childhood playground accident, this involved the fracture of Michael’s front tooth at the age of 12 years. From the accident, Michael has experienced first hand the physical and emotional trauma, and the loss of confidence with a smile he was not happy with for years. With the advancement in technology and many replacement crowns, Michael’s broken tooth now looks natural.

For Michael, cosmetic dentistry is a science, and art, that has to be delivered with passion and perseverance to meet the patient’s emotional feeling, wants, and needs. This has to start by listening to the patients’ concerns first.

Michael’s mission is to give his patients a smile that looks good, feels good, healthy, and lasts a long time.
